DHS Student Memo 1/2/12
1. Seniors: Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11, 2012. Virginia State University will host Super Saturday 2012 from 10 AM – 2 PM in the Engineering Building. This event will offer FAFSA Assistance, a College Fair, Health Fair, Tax Preparation, and Door Prizes. A book voucher scholarship will be awarded to a participating student who will attend Virginia State University. Parents and students are encouraged to attend.
2. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible to apply for a “Young Writers Workshop” sponsored by Denison University in Granville, Ohio from June 17-24, 2012. To find out more information, visit http://reynolds.denison.edu. Application deadline: March 9.
3. Sophomore and junior girls interested in the field of Engineering: The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) will be sponsoring a High School Visitation Program on February 25, 2012. The purpose of this program is to introduce young women to various opportunities and fields of engineering. Enrollment will be capped at the first 200 students accepted. Sixty of those will be invited to spend the night in UVA dorms with first year SWE members. There is a $15 non-refundable application fee and an additional $25 fee for those students accepted. Applications must be postmarked by January 20, 2012.
4. Seniors: Bryant and Stratton College will be offering a special opportunity for seniors to enroll in a college course for free through their school. The three courses being offered are Intro. to Healthcare, Intro. to Criminal Justice, and Business Principles. The 15 week term begins on January 11th from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. If interested see your counselor.
VCU School of the Arts/Music Department has scheduled auditions for prospective students for the 2011-12 school year:

SOPHOMORES: The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference will be held May 18-20 at JMU. HOBY brings students across the state together who have potential or demonstrated leadership ability. Students must write a 300 word essay on the most rewarding or challenging aspect of being a leader on your school and community. Only one student will be selected. If you are interested, please see your counselor.

Students will write an essay on either General Robert E. Lee or General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. See website for application and details. Deadline is 2-15-12
SCHOLARSHIPS:
SENIORS: 2012 GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program is for students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. Go to HYPERLINK “http://www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships” \t “_blank” www.reaganfoundation.org/scholarships. Deadline is February 17, 2012.
Scholarship for Military Children: Students who are dependent, unmarried children of active-duty service members, reservists, guardsmen, retirees, or survivors of service members who died on active duty or while receiving military retired pay, may apply. VSGA Scholarship Program is for students that has an interest in golf. Consideration is based on the following: academic achievement, character, and financial need. Applicants must submit 3 character references, letter from a representative of a VSGA member club, transcripts and 500 word (or less) essay. Seniors must plan to attend a college in Virginia. KFC Colonel’s Scholars is for seniors with 2.75 GPA, plan to enroll in a public university in Virginia, pursue a Bachelor’s degree, and demonstrate financial need. Go to HYPERLINK “http://www.kfcscholars.org” \t “_blank” www.kfcscholars.org to apply. Deadline is February 8, 2012.
Gloria Wille Bell and Carlos R. Bell Scholarship Program is for students who are interested in attending the University of Michigan for engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science or other related scientific fields. American Fire Sprinkler Association essay contest requires a 700-1000 word essay. Write a creative, interesting, and convincing essay where the character(s) can be historical or cultural, past or present, or completely fictional, that depicts the history and importance of automatic sprinklers. Foot Locker Scholar Athletes Program: To participate, s eniors currently involved in high school sports,intramural sports,or community based sports, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, be born on or after 9/1/1991. Officers,directors,members,and employees (including Store Associates) of Foot Locker Inc.,Foot Locker Foundation Inc.,or Do Something Inc. and any of their subsidiaries or divisions,are not eligible to apply;nor are members of the immediate family of anyone described above. Allen & Allen Scholarship: Seniors who have overcome obstacles or special challenges and have managed to achieve high standards of performance are eligible to apply. SENIORS: Willard G. Plentl Aviation Scholarship is offered to students interested in an aviation career in a non-engineering program. Students must have certification of acceptance in post secondary education program, 3.5 unweighted gpa, transcripts, 350-500 word essay, activity list and recommendation letters. Deadline is Feb 17, 2012. Applications are available in guidance.
AXA Achievement Community Scholarship is for students that are active in their community and may have led a project to help others. Application located at HYPERLINK “http://www.axa-achievement.com/” \t “_blank” www.axa-achievement.com and deadline is 2-1-12.
The National CO-OP Scholarship Program is for any student that will attend: Drexel, Johnson & Wales, Kettering, Rochester Institute of Technology, Univ. of Cincinnati, Univ. of Toledo, or Wentworth Institute of Technology. Students must have a 3.5 GPA and type a 500 word essay describing why you have chosen to pursue a college cooperative education program. Deadline: application must be postmarked by Feb 15, 2012.
