Bestbuy Scholarship:  Students in grade 9-12 may apply.  Grades, community service & work experience are needed.  Apply online at www.bestbuy-communityrelations.com.  Deadline is Feb. 15, 2012.

Armenian Education Center Scholarship:  Students in grades 9-12 may apply.  Go to www.armenian-educationcenter.org to apply.  Deadline is April 2, 2012.

2012 ASYMCA Essay Contest:  This contest is for children who are currently in the 1st through 12 th grade and are dependents of active duty or retired military personnel.  The subject of the essay must be “My Military Hero.”  Students should visit the Armed Services YMCA website (www.asymca,org) for complete rules and an entry form.  All entries must be received by March 16, 2012.

The University of Virginia Curry School of Education will sponsor a Summer Enrichment Program (SEP) for rising fifth through rising eleventh grade students.  The purpose of this program is to engage gifted/or high ability students in learning experiences designed to cultivate interest and potential in a variety of fields and disciplines.  The SEP is divided into three 12 day sessions beginning June 26 and ending August 4.  Tuition for the 2012 summer is $1200 with an application fee of $25.  Applications can be found online at:  http://curry.virginia.edu/sep.  See your counselor if you need a paper application.  Limited financial assistance is available and all financial aid forms are due by March 1.  All applications are due February 15, 2012.

VCU School of the Arts/Music Department has scheduled auditions for prospective students for the 2011-12 school year: February 18, 2012, February 20, 2012 – Auditions    

 

SOPHOMORES:   The Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Conference will be held May 18-20 at JMU. HOBY brings students across the state together who have potential or demonstrated leadership ability. Students must write a 300 word essay on the most rewarding or challenging aspect of being a leader on your school and community. Only one student will be selected. JUNIORS AND SENIORS

Rising juniors and seniors and graduating seniors:  The NIAHD Pre-Collegiate Summer Program in Early American History will be offering two courses during two three week sessions this summer.  The sessions will run from June 24-July 14 and July 15-August 64, 2012.  Courses that will be offered are HIS 216: American History from Jamestown through the American Revolution and HIS 216: American History from the American Revolution through the Civil War.  Upon completion of the two courses, students will earn 4 college credits.  Students must be highly motivated with an interest in American History.    Interested students see their counselor for an application and visit www.wm.edu/niahd.         Virginia Council on the Status of Women (VCSW) 2012 STEM Essay Contest:  Young women should be in their junior or senior year in high school and hold at least a 2.5 GPA to apply. Entries should follow the guidelines and submitted through council.women@dss.virginia.gov.  Deadline for entries is 3 p.m. on February 20, 2012, see your counselor for an application.  (shared)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                The Lee-Jackson Educational Foundation  Scholarship can be found at http://www.lee-jackson.org.  Students in grades 11-12 will write an essay on either General Robert E. Lee or General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson.  See website for application and details.  Deadline is 2-15-12.

Seniors:  Mark your calendars for Saturday, February 11, 2012.  Virginia State University will host Super Saturday 2012 from 10 AM – 2 PM in the Engineering Building.  This event will offer FAFSA Assistance, a College Fair, Health Fair, Tax Preparation, and Door Prizes.  A book voucher scholarship will be awarded to a participating student who will attend Virginia State University.  Parents and students are encouraged to attend.

Seniors-  Need help completing your Financial Aid form (FAFSA) for college?  Super Saturday events will offer free assistance completing the FAFSA form and computer access to complete FAFSA forms on-line.   Parents and students are encouraged to attend.  The following colleges in our area will be offering free assistance to students on the following dates: , Saturday, February 11, 2012 @ Virginia State University from 10AM-2PM.

Seniors-Interested in the field of Science?  An intensive month-long camp will be offered to seniors during the summer after they graduate from high school.  The camp is will be held in West Virginia and is for individuals interested in being challenged academically.  Only two students can be chosen to represent Virginia.  To be eligible, the following criteria must be met: 1) U.S. applicants must be candidates for high school graduation between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012; International applicants must be 16 to 18 years of age during the program. 2)  Must demonstrate superior academic proficiency, including recognition in mathematics and/or the sciences; 3) Must demonstrate an application of leadership abilities and social maturity through involvement in school and community activities; 4) Must demonstrate skills and achievements outside the realm of science and outside the realm of academic pursuits; and 5) Must demonstrate a curiosity and an eagerness to explore many and varied topics.  Information about the National Youth Science Camp and an application may be obtained at the National Youth Science Camp Web site, http://2012.nysc.org/delegates/apply/.  The application must be received by the Virginia Department of Education no later than February 15, 2012, at the following address

Summer Jobs                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           The Virginia State Parks Youth Conservation Corps began accepting applications on January 1, 2012, for ages 14-17.  If selected, participants will participate in the following activities:  wildlife and fisheries habitat improvement, trail and campground construction and restoration, timber and shoreline improvement, and landscape beautification.  To be eligible, applicants must turn the age of 14 by June 1, 2012.  Participants must be willing to work outside and complete physically demanding activities.  Conservation Corps is divided into 2 separate sessions which are as follows:  Session One:   June 24-July 14 and Session Two:   July 22-August 11, 2012.  Participants will only be able to attend one session.  All participants receive room and board, t-shirts, and work-related tools for the three weeks.  Upon completion of the three weeks, participants receive a $500 stipend.  Students interested should go to http://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state_parks/ycc.shtml and complete an online application.  See your counselor for more details.  Deadline: April 13, 2012.

Seniors:                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        Richard Bland College will be here on March 1 at 9:30 to meet with interested students.  After the meeting, on-site admissions will take place.  Seniors interested in participating in on-site admissions must sign-up in guidance and have the following items completed:  1) application with $25 application fee , 2)Counselor certification form, 3)Student disciplinary form

Juniors and Seniors:

A representative from Chowan University will be here on March 14, 2012 at 10 AM in the auditorium to meet with interested students.  The representative will also be accepting applications from seniors.  See your guidance counselor for an application. 

SCHOLARSHIPS:

Rev. Neil R. Cline Scholarship:  Seniors who will be seeking a career in a Christian Education field should apply.  An annual scholarship of $1000 will be awarded.  See your counselor for details.

Alpha Delta Kappa:  Female seniors interested in a degree in education with plans to teach and reside in Dinwiddie County can apply.  Minimum GPA of 3.0, resume, transcripts, essay & letter of recommendation are required.  Applications are available in guidance.  The deadline is April 27, 2012.

The Community Foundation:  Two scholarships, the Granger Ancarrow and Lillian Sutherland Clements Memorial, will be available under one application.  Go to www.tcfrichmond.org to apply.  All materials must be received by March 6, 2012.

American Society of Military Comptrollers Southside VA Chapter Scholarship Program:  Seniors must submit 2 letters of recommendation, college acceptance letter & picture.  Applicant’s scholastic achievements, leadership abilities, extracurricular activities & career goals will be considered.  Applications are available in guidance.   Applications must be received by March 10, 2012. 

The Society of the Cincinnati History Essay Contest:  Seniors attending any 4-year university in VA should apply.  Essay will be on the Declaration of Independence and should be limited to 1500 words.  Applications are available in Guidance and must be postmarked by March 16, 2012.

Sutherland Ruritan Club Scholarship:  Two scholarships, A. David Mendenhall and Ruritan National Foundation, will be available under one application.  Seniors must be a resident of Dinwiddie County and a Ruri-teen member or son, daughter, or grandchild of a Ruritan member.  Applications are available in guidance.  Letter and application form must be returned to Sharon Gibbs by February 24, 2012.

Colonial Agricultural Educational Foundation:  Three scholarships, T.O Rainey Jr. Ruritan, Dinwiddie Ruritan I and Dinwiddie Ruritan II, will be available under one application.  Go to www.colonialfarmcredit.com to apply.  Applications are due March 1, 2012.

Roper Memorial Scholarship:  Applications will be considered for children, stepchildren, and grandchildren who reside in the Ft. Lee-Southside VA area.  An applicant’s sponsor can be active duty military, auxiliary member of SVC, MOAA, retired or deceased military member, or a senior military advisor or high school principal for a high school senior enrolled in JROTC.  Applications are available in Guidance and must be postmarked by March 4, 2012.

2012 VAFCS Outstanding High School Senior Award:  Seniors who have been enrolled in Family and Consumer Sciences for at least 2 years during grades 9-12, have overall GPA of 2.5, have a GPA of 3.0 in Family and Consumer Sciences, and show evidence of leadership in FCCLA & extracurricular activities should apply.  Applicants must submit a statement from guidance dept. stating class rank & GPA and 2 letters of recommendation.  Application must be postmarked by February 15, 2012.

Granville P. Meade Scholarship:  Seniors who have achieved academically, but who are financially unable to attend college should apply.  Completed applications and activity list must be submitted to your guidance counselor by March 2, 2012.
